Quick answer: There is no single global number. National authorities recommend anywhere from 40 mg to 500 mg of EPA + DHA per day for a 4-to-8-year-old, depending on which country's guideline you read. Most children in India fall short of even the lower end, because the two reliable dietary sources — oily sea fish and marine-derived oils — are eaten rarely or not at all in most households. The gap is real and measurable. The claims often made about closing it are not always supported by the evidence.

The problem isn't "deficiency." It's a gap nobody measures.

There is no clinical diagnosis called "omega-3 deficiency" in children. No paediatrician writes it on a chart. No standard blood panel in India tests for it.

That absence is the actual problem. A nutrient with no routine test, no visible short-term symptom, and no place in the standard health check simply drops out of the conversation — while intake quietly runs below every published recommendation for years.

Here is what the numbers look like when you line them up.

ICMR-NIN's Recommended Dietary Allowances for Indians (2024) set total n-3 PUFA at 2.2 g/day alongside 6.6 g/day of n-6 PUFA — roughly a 3:1 ratio — and cap visible cooking fat at 20–50 g/day. Note what that recommendation is made of: the bulk of that 2.2 g is ALA, the plant-form omega-3 in mustard oil, soybean oil, walnuts and flaxseed. It is not EPA or DHA.

A typical Indian diet can look adequate on paper against the total n-3 figure while supplying close to zero EPA and DHA. That is the gap.

EPA and DHA are not interchangeable with ALA

Omega-3 is not one substance. It is a family, and the three members that matter behave very differently.

The body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA. It just does it badly. The US National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements states the conversion happens mainly in the liver and is "very limited, with reported rates of less than 15%" — and the conversion onward to DHA is poorer still than the conversion to EPA.

What this means in practice: a purely vegetarian diet can meet an ALA target comfortably and still deliver very little DHA. Eating more flaxseed does not fix a DHA gap the way eating more sardines does. This is the single most misunderstood point in consumer omega-3 content, and it is where a well-sourced page earns its citations.

In an Indian kitchen, the practical list is: bangda (Indian mackerel), tarli (sardine), surmai (kingfish), hilsa, rawas (Indian salmon), and canned sardine or mackerel. Freshwater fish — rohu, catla, tilapia — contain omega-3 but at substantially lower long-chain concentrations than oily sea fish. A child eating rohu twice a week is not getting the same delivery as a child eating bangda twice a week.

Two oily-fish meals a week for a school-age child comfortably clears even the highest guideline in the table above. That is the whole solution, if the household eats fish.

For vegetarian and Jain families this is the crux: every commonly recommended "vegetarian omega-3 food" in India supplies ALA, not DHA. Given a conversion rate under 15%, a child eating walnuts and flaxseed daily is still receiving very little DHA. Algal oil is the only vegetarian food source of preformed DHA — worth knowing, and rarely mentioned.

What to actually read on a children's omega-3 label

  • EPA and DHA in mg per stated serving — the only number that matters. If the label gives only "total omega-3" or "fish oil mg", it is telling you the least useful figure.
  • The serving size — compare like with like across brands.
  • Form — natural triglyceride or ethyl ester. Triglyceride is the form found in fish; ethyl ester is produced during concentration.
  • Freshness and oxidation — rancid fish oil is the most common quality failure and the usual cause of fishy aftertaste and burps.
  • Antioxidant system — vitamin E or plant-oil antioxidants slow oxidation in the bottle.
  • Contaminant testing — heavy metals and PCBs; look for third-party test results.
  • FSSAI licence number — mandatory on any nutraceutical sold in India.
  • Added vitamins — useful, but check they are declared with amounts, not just named.
